Birth Year Calculator
(Find Birth Year From Age)

Enter an age and a reference date, and get the exact range of possible birth dates — plus the matching birth year, or the two adjacent years it could fall between.

Why age alone doesn't pin down a birth year

When someone tells you they're 18, that's only true for part of the year — the part after their birthday and before their next one. Without knowing the month and day, that single age can line up with two different birth years, depending on which side of their birthday the reference date falls on. This calculator works out that full range instead of guessing at one year.

How the calculation works

The tool above does this automatically, but here's the logic behind it:

Latest possible birth date = Reference Date − Age (years)

Earliest possible birth date = Reference Date − (Age + 1) years + 1 day

For example, someone who is a completed 18 years old on July 29, 2026 could have been born any time from July 30, 2007 through July 29, 2008 — so their birth year is 2007 or 2008, depending on the exact date.

How to use it

STEP 1

Enter the age

Use the completed age in years — the age the person has already turned, not the age they're turning next.

STEP 2

Set the reference date

Leave it blank for today, or set it to whatever date the age was measured from — a form, a record, or an event date.

STEP 3

Read the range

You'll get the exact possible birth date range and the matching birth year, or the two adjacent years it could fall between.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the calculator give two possible birth years instead of one?

Completed age alone doesn't reveal whether the birthday has already happened this year, so the true birth year can fall in either of two adjacent years.

What reference date should I use?

The date the age applies to — leave it as today for a "right now" question, or set it to a specific form, deadline, or event date.

Can I use a date in the past or future?

Yes — any reference date works, as long as it's the date the stated age is measured from.

Is this the same as an age calculator?

It's the reverse — an age calculator goes from a known birth date to a current age; this tool goes from a known age back to the possible birth dates.

Does this account for leap years?

Yes, the date math adjusts for leap years automatically.
